The Robotext Problem continues Unabated

Americans received 78 billion robotexts in the first half of 2023. By one account, estimated losses to robotext scams in the first half of 2023. According to the FTC, an estimated 54,208 complaints about unwanted text messages have already been placed by June 2023.

In June 2023, the FCC initiated a process to propose new rules that would make it easier for consumers to revoke their consent to receive robotexts. This would also clarify the obligations of companies to honor those requests.

The FCC didn’t implement a final ruling on robocalls in June 2023. Instead, they initiated a process by proposing new rules called the “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM)”. This proposal aimed to strengthen consumers’ ability to opt-out of robocalls and robotexts. The NPRM proposes ways to make it easier for people to revoke their consent to receive these calls and texts. It also aimed to clarify the obligations of companies to honor those requests.
