According to the Robocall Index, so far in 2021, robocalls have increased by nearly 450 million calls, or 16% when compared to the same time period last year. The Federal Communications Commission cites robocalls as the agency’s top consumer complaint.

Americans have received almost 39 billion robocalls so far this year, averaging roughly 4.3 billion robocalls calls/month, putting the country on a pace to hit between 51 and 52 billion robocalls for the year. [See more at the Robocall Index]

The robocall problem continues, with potential signs of decline due to technological advancements and continued efforts by regulatory bodies.

In 2020, the FCC adopted rules requiring voice service providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN in the IP portions of their voice networks by June 30, 2021. Since then, the FCC has worked to expand the implementation obligation to additional providers with the goal of achieving ubiquitous STIR/SHAKEN adoption.

Today, most providers—including voice service providers, gateway providers (U.S.-based intermediate providers that receive calls directly from a foreign originating or intermediate provider), and intermediate providers that receive unauthenticated calls directly from originating providers—are required to use STIR/SHAKEN to authenticate the caller ID information for the calls they transmit.
